University of Kent Boiler House Workshop

Project Name: University of Kent Chatham
Location: Central Boiler House

The project involved the complete refurbishment of the existing Mechanical & Public Health Services systems to suit current standards and the specialist activities of the University. The Central Boiler House building is listed and a Scheduled Monument, therefore the works were carried out with constraints of such a Historic building. Heating to the central workshop area is provided by LTHW radiant heating panels mounted at high level.

Heating for the smaller workshop areas and offices is provided by the wall mounted radiators. The LTHW condensing boiler that serves the radiant panels and radiators also serves the heating for the hot water cylinder.

The workshop areas are provided with both general and specialist ventilation systems.

Tempered supply ventilation is provided to the central workshop and supply and extract ventilation with heat recovery is provided to the metal work shop, plaster workshop, and print area.

Specialist ventilation systems were provided to the wood, metal, dust and plaster workshops. These were designed, supplied, installed and commissioned by a specialist contractor.

A new metered main cold water supply was provided to the building to serve the new gas fired condensing boiler, cylinder and all the new sinks.

Specialist traps were provided to the sinks within the plaster workshop.

All the new equipment was be linked to a Honeywell BMS outstation to allow remote monitoring of the plant via the University existing building management system.

Paris and Farnborough Air Show

Installation of air conditioning and ventilation system within large display tents and the decommissioning of units at the end of the shows.

Aerodrome Road, Hendon

Project Name: Aerodrome Road Network Rail

  • The project consisted of eight new business units, contained within 4 blocks, of portal frame clad single storey buildings, where Aura were awarded the mechanical and electrical fit out of all units combined with external lighting.Domestic Services
    • Each unit was equipped with a kitchenette station and DDA compliant WC.
    • The kitchenette was supplied with hot water from a point of use electric water heater with a mains cold water supply.
    • The WC was supplied with DDA compliant sanitary ware and additional WHB with hot and cold water supplies taken from the kitchenette services.
    • The waste and soil systems were run to new soil stacks local to WC.
    • All hot and cold systems were chlorinated and certificates of conformity issue upon completion.

    Electrical Services

    • Each unit was provided with a new electrical 3 Ph TP&N supply and distribution board.
    • The kitchenette area was supplied with wall mounted twin 13A sockets and a switched spur for the domestic water heater.
    • The general areas were outfitted with vapour poof twin fluorescent light fittings with  a third comprising of self-contained emergency fittings.
    • The WC block was fitted with a single emergency down light fitting, controlled from local light switch, coupled to a wall mounted extract fan, energised with light, and equipped with a run on timer.
    • Each unit was provided with a PIR activated external light, and the access areas were provided with high mast street lamps providing general road and pavement illumination.

    Both the mechanical and electrical services were installed under a design and build contract, with all design works carried out by Aura.
